China launches world’s fastest internet service, 2 years ahead of forecast

China launches world’s fastest internet service

  • This is a fiber broadband service, and it was possible through a collaboration between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies, and Cernet Corporation, SMCP reported.
  • It’s part of China’s Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI), and the project has been in the works for 10 years. It’s also the latest version of the China Education and Research Network (CERNET), the country’s first nationwide education and research computer network.
  • This internet service is powered by an optical fibre network spanning more than 3,000 kms. In terms of data transmission, it covers three corners of China from Beijing in the north, Wuhan in central China, and Guangzhou in the south. And it can transfer 1.2 terabits of data per second between these three places.

In comparison to what’s available now, this is peak speed as the fastest that was launched recently transfer data at 400 gigabits per second. At present, the “internet backbone networks” used around the world are capable of transmitting data at 100 gigabits per second. We’re talking about 1,200 gigabits here, something that was predicted to not launch until around 2025.

According to Huawei’s VP Wang Lei, this internet service can be compared to sending 150 HD films in “just one second.” Plans for the speed usage are much bigger though with nationwide use in large areas of the country’s growth. China plans to make FITI available by the end of this year.
