Director Sanjay Gadhvi of Dhoom fame dies at 56, Abhishek Bachchan is ‘shocked’ | Bollywood
Filmmaker Sanjay Gadhvi of Dhoom fame died at his Mumbai home on Sunday. His daughter Sanjina Gadhvi shared the news with PTI. He was 56 and was about to turn 57 three days later. He directed the 2004 film Dhoom starring Hrithil Roshan, and its 2006 sequel Dhoom 2. YRF, Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu have shared their condolences and remembered him on social media.
Sanjina told PTI, “He passed away at 9.30 am this morning at his residence. We are not sure what it is, but it is most likely a heart attack. He wasn’t unwell, he was perfectly healthy.” He is survived by his wife Gina and two daughters, with Sanjina being the elder one.
YRF, Dhoom actors share condolences
Abhishek Bachchan, who has been a constant in all three Dhoom movies, took to Instagram to express his grief on the death of Gadhvi. He wrote, “I took this photo of Sanjay whilst we were filming the climax of Dhoom 2 in South Africa. We made 2 films together – Dhoom and Dhoom 2. Sanju, when I spoke to you last week and we were reminiscing about our shoots and memories I would never have imagined even in my craziest dreams that I would have to write a post like this.”
“I’m shocked beyond belief. You had faith in me, even when I didn’t. You gave me my first ever hit!!! I can never ever forget that or be able express what it meant to me. I will cherish your friendship always. Rest in peace my brother,” he added.
Bipasha Basu, who featured in Dhoom 2, shared a picture of Gadhvi on Instagram Stories and wrote, “Rip my friend Om Shanti @sanjaygadhvi4 Gone too soon.”
John Abraham, who played the antagonist in Dhoom, also took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Remember the times I spent with you on the film closest to my heart #Dhoom. May the angels always ride with you. Rest in peace Sanjay Gadhvi (namaste emoji).”
Dhoom music composer Pritam wrote on X, “Just can’t process this news about Sanjay . All the noise around me has just muffled. And yet the show has to go on…I have lost the mentor, the man who found me, believed in me.” Pritam’s breakthrough film Mere Yaar Ki Shadi Hai was directed by Sanjay. The composer is all set to perform at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad at the ICC World Cup finals.
Actor Celina Jaitly also shared condolences on X, “When we chatted last year on my birthday I did not know this would be the last wonderful wish from you dearest @SanjayGadhvi4 Thank you for all the positivity you brought to my life. You left us all in utter and complete shock. Rest in peace my friend. I will always keep your guidance and wishes close to my heart. #sanjaygadhvi.”
A picture of Gadhvi was shared on YRF’s official X page with the caption: “The magic he created on screen will be cherished forever. May his soul rest in peace. #SanjayGadhvi.”

Sanjay had made his directorial debut with 2000 film Tere Liye. He directed quite a few films made under the Yash Raj Films banner. Among them was Dhoom, Dhoom 2 and the 2002 film Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. He also directed Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan and Minissha Lamba-starrer Kidnap in 2008, Arjun Rampal-starrer Ajab Gazabb Love in 2012 and Operation Parindey in 2020, which starred Amit Sadh and Rahul Dev.
