‘Easy’ vanilla mug cake recipe – takes less than two minutes to make

Bakeries and supermarket shelves are lined with cakes, but making them yourself is much more fun.

Baking can be an arduous and complicated task but there are some cakes that can be whipped up in no time at all.

BBC Good Food shared a delectable vanilla mug cake recipe that budding bakers can try this week.

It takes just five minutes to prep and two minutes to cook, so won’t eat into your day at all.

It contains eight simple ingredients – many of which you might have at home already – so it’s not a cake that will break the bank.

The-two step recipe by BBC Good Food’s food copy editor Samuel Goldsmith is extremely simple – it’s a great one to get young kids or grandkids involved in.

BBC Good Food said: “Treat yourself to this easy vanilla mug cake for one. Made in the microwave, it takes only a few minutes to make. Decorate with icing sugar and sprinkles.”

This recipe serves one so is the perfect dessert for a cosy night in. If you’re hosting more people, simply make more mug cakes.

Ingredients

30g butter

Two ½ tbsp caster sugar

Six tbsp plain flour

¼ tsp baking powder

Three ½ tbsp milk

½ tsp vanilla

Four tsp icing sugar

Sprinkles, to serve (optional)

Method

1. Put the butter in a microwave-safe mug and microwave on high for 30-45 seconds until melted. Stir in the caster sugar, flour, baking powder, milk and vanilla until smooth. Microwave on high for between one minute and one minute 15 seconds until cooked through. To make sure, insert a skewer into the middle and it should come out clean. Set aside whilst you make the icing.

2. Combine the icing sugar with enough water to create a drizzly consistency. Spoon this over the cake – it will melt a bit with the heat of the sponge. For decoration, go grazy with some sprinkles and serve. Enjoy!

BBC Good Food tested this recipe in a 750-watt microwave – timings may vary if your microwave is more or less powerful.

For those who prefer chocolatey treats, why not try 45-second chocolate mug cake that “melts in the middle”.
