Huge effort to rescue people from their burning flats after fire breaks out | UK | News

A huge group of firefighters has been fighting a blazing flat in Lewisham this morning. Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters have been dispatched to the flat on Polecroft Lane after the London Fire Brigade was called at 3.56 am. Fourteen people have been rescued from the fire, including two children and two people from a neighbouring flat.

Around ten people were led to safety while wearing the smoke hoods and two children were rescued from a staircase while wearing breathing apparatuses.

Station Commander Sam Woodhams said: “Crews are working extremely hard to bring the fire under control and are making steady progress.

“Firefighters are likely to remain at the scene for the next few hours.”

Fire crews from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Lee Green and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

In the London Fire Brigade’s latest update on Twitter, it said: “Firefighters are making steady progress at a flat fire on Polecroft Lane in #Lewisham.”
