YouTube working on Shazam-like song recognising feature, currently in testing

Shazam-like YouTube feature

  • YouTube on its support page shared a post about its latest experiments. One of these is the addition of more ways for people to search for songs on YouTube.
  • You can do this by either humming a tune (which will probably not work most of the time) or record a song that’s currently being played for more than three seconds.
  • Once YouTube identifies the song it will share relevant official music content along with user-generated videos, or Shorts that have used the same song.
  • If you’re an Android user, you can check if you have this feature by toggling the voice search button to use the new song search feature.
  • As mentioned above, this feature is currently in testing, and so it’s available only to select Android users.
  • There’s no word when or if YouTube will actually release a stable version of this feature. But since this would be very useful for users there shouldn’t be any reason for YouTube to not roll it out. YouTube currently has around 2.7 billion users globally.

This feature isn’t new though as it’s already available on apps such as SoundHound and Shazam. On iPhones, it’s integrated natively since Apple bought Shazam, and you also have the option to open the songs directly on Apple Music. It’s not clear whether the same will be available on YouTube Music as well.

Other features that are being tested on YouTube is actually a redesign that will make it even more difficult to skip ads. The redesign makes the ‘Skip Ads’ button transparent, smaller and with rounded edges. So you might just miss it or find it difficult to search for on YouTube.
