Harbhajan Singh lashes out at Inzamam-ul-Haq over ‘conversion’ claim
Pakistan cricket is currently in the news for all the wrong reasons. Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, and other cricketers have been vocal in their criticism of Pakistan cricket after their performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament, concluding in the fifth position with four victories in nine matches, prompted discussions and criticisms.
It took a new turn on Tuesday when an old video surfaced online where former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has made some big claims.
In the video, Inzamam alleged that Harbhajan, along with other Indian cricketers, used to attend religious sessions led by Maulana Tariq Jameel, who was associated with the Pakistan cricket team. In the video, Inzamam claimed that he invited Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, and Mohammad Kaif to join the prayer sessions. He also said that Harbhajan Singh also participated in these sessions. As per Inzamam, Harbhajan expressed an inclination to embrace the teachings and even showed a desire to convert.
In the video, Inzamam shared, “Maulana Tariq Jameel used to visit us every day. We had a room for Namaz. Following the prayers, he would talk to us. After a day or two, we invited Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, and Mohammad Kaif for prayers. I noticed that 2-3 more Indian players also used to join; they won’t say the prayers but used to listen to the Maulana.”
Inzamam further said, “Harbhajan once told me, ‘my heart says that I should agree to whatever he (Maulana) says.’ I said, ‘then follow him. What is stopping you?’ Then, he replied, ‘I see you and then I stop. Your life isn’t like that.’ So, it is us who are not following our religion. We are to be blamed.”
As soon as this video went viral, Harbhajan Singh responded with a strongly-worded tweet where he refuted all the claims and asserted that he remains a proud Sikh and a proud Indian.
“Yeh kon sa nasha pee kar baat kar raha hai ? I am a proud Indian and proud Sikh..yeh Bakwaas log kuch bi bakte hai”

Harbhajan has fairly cordial relations with former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, with whom he had appeared in a heartwarming video earlier this year. He has in the past spoken about how players from India and Pakistan remain good friends despite their on-field rivalry.
