World Cup winner Olga Carmona releases heartbreaking statement following dad’s death | Football | Sport
Women’s World Cup winner Olga Carmona has released a heartbreaking statement after learning of her father’s death in the aftermath of Sunday’s final. Carmona scored the only goal of the game just before the half hour mark as Spain defeated Sarina Wiegman’s England side.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Carmona wrote: “And without knowing it, I had my Star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique. I know that you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad.”
Carmona’s father had passed away several hours before Sunday’s final had kicked off. But the winger was only told about his death after the match had ended. And on Sunday, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed the news in an online statement.
“The @RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona’s father,” it read. “The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final. We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football.”
Meanwhile, Carmona’s club Real Madrid also penned their own words after the tragedy. “Real Madrid CF, its president and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of the father of our player Olga Carmona,” read their statement. “Real Madrid wants to express its condolences and affection to Olga, her relatives and all her loved ones. Rest in peace.”
