Side hustle: Woman makes £9,000 selling old furniture on Facebook and pays off debt | Personal Finance | Finance

One woman is sharing how she managed to pull herself out of debt thanks to her side hustle.

Lilly Skjoldahl, 26, from North Texas, US found herself $10,000 (£8,723) in debt due to dentist bills.

However, she was able to repay this sum of money by flipping old furniture found on Facebook Marketplace.

According to Ms Skjoldahl, she was advised to use her credit card or use a loan to get out off debt.

Thanks to her side hustle, she was able to avoid pushing herself into further debt and is sharing how people can turn a profit too.

Primarily, Ms Skjoldahl works in public health and licensed athletic trainer but revealed to why taking on an extra job was essential.

On her medical bills, she explained: I went home and sobbed because I was in so much pain but had no way to pay for it upfront.

“That’s when I saw some old, dingy furniture on Marketplace and I thought to myself, maybe I could flip a piece of furniture and make some extra cash.”

The entrepreneur’s first piece of furniture which she flipped was a Kroehler Brutalist nightstand.

Thanks to her crafty artistic skills, she made it into a cocktail cabinet and only purchased it for $60 (£48.07).

After sanding it down, staining it and adding new legs, Ms Skjoldahl was able to resell it for a profit of $190 (£152.21).

The side hustler added: “So in total, I spent around $175 and only made a $15 profit, but I was so excited about it.

“I did not know at the time how rare of a piece it was, and I should’ve definitely charged more.”

According to the businesswoman, social media is the perfect place to begin a reselling side hustle.

Ms Skjoldahl said: “Facebook Marketplace is then a great place to sell, as well as Instagram and Etsy!

“But be patient – other people are struggling financially too, so sometimes it takes a while to find the right buyer.

“Also, be patient with yourself, it’s definitely a learning curve to start any business, but don’t give up. Remember, the end goal is always to make a profit.”
